Cambodia Strengthens Prevention of Right-Hand Drive Vehicles Smuggling from Thailand

Phnom Penh: Commander of the Fifth Army Division, Lt. Gen. Sam Oun has ordered the troops stationed along the Cambodian-Thai border to strictly prevent the smuggling of right-hand drive vehicles. This is in accordance to the directive issued by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Aun Pornmoniroth. Lt. Gen Oun stresses that any member of the military troops who will be found helping smugglers to bring those vehicles to the kingdom illegally will face the law.

Minister Pornmoniroth has also instructed all ministries and institutions to strictly implement laws and policies prohibiting the import and use of right-hand drive vehicles. However, there are exceptions for those with special permission from the Royal Government, such as fire trucks, garbage trucks and others. The Ministry has added that the import tax and import duties on right-hand drive vehicles will be available locally by June next year. Although, the steering wheel must be adjusted from right to left to be legalized in Cambodia's road traffic.
